How to Test SF6 Gas Quality at a Substation: Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction

Sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) is a key insulating gas in modern high-voltage equipment — breakers, GIS and GIL. CIGRE and IEC data show many SF₆ failures trace to deteriorating gas quality: excess moisture or decomposition products. Regular testing prevents outages before they happen.

This guide covers what to measure, how to connect safely and how to interpret results using Rapidox SF₆ analyzers from Cambridge Sensotec.

What “gas quality” means

Fresh SF₆ is odourless and typically ≥99.9% pure. In service it degrades through:

Moisture (H₂O)

Enters via seals, filling or leaks. Above about −10°C dew point, dielectric strength drops sharply. IEC 60480 limits used SF₆ to ≤−5°C dew point.

Decomposition products (SO₂, H₂S, CF₄)

Arcing breaks SF₆ into toxic by-products — SO₂ marks arcing, H₂S forms with moisture, CF₄ indicates thermal stress.

Falling SF₆ concentration

Slow leaks reduce pressure until interrupting capability is lost.

Step 1: Preparation

You need: portable SF₆ analyser (e.g. Rapidox SF6 6100), hose kit, PPE — gloves, goggles; respirator if decomposition is suspected.

Identify OEM and coupling (DN8 Siemens, DN20 ABB, etc.) from the SF6 hose kit.

Safety: de-energise or use dedicated sampling valves; ventilate — SF₆ is heavier than air and pools in low spots; do not sample below minimum compartment pressure.

Step 2: Connection

  1. Close the sampling valve.
  2. Fit the correct RECTUS 21 adapter — click-lock coupling.
  3. Connect the analyser hose; power on and wait for ready.
  4. Open the valve slowly.

RECTUS 21 is a closed coupling — minimal atmospheric release when connecting or disconnecting.

Step 3: Measurement

Interpretation:

  • Moisture OK, SF₆ >99%, SO₂ <1 ppm — excellent; routine resample in 12 months.
  • Moisture −10…−5°C — acceptable; plan resample.
  • Moisture >−5°C or SO₂ >12 ppm — regas or reclaim; find moisture or arcing source.
  • SO₂ >50 ppm or H₂S >10 ppm — remove equipment for inspection.

Step 4: Documentation

Rapidox 6100 stores time-stamped results (USB/Ethernet). Minimum report: date, asset ID, all readings, trend vs last test, verdict (OK / watch / replace gas), signature.

Common mistakes

  1. Sampling at very low pressure — air contaminates the reading.
  2. No baseline at commissioning — trends are impossible.
  3. Wrong adapter — distorts moisture readings.
  4. Ignoring SO₂ — the key hidden-arc indicator.
