LUBExpert ON-GUARD: condition-based automatic bearing lubrication
The SDT LUBExpert ON-GUARD system delivers grease only when acoustic analysis confirms it is needed. Architecture, consumable savings and typical layouts for conveyors, fans and pump stations.

70% of bearing failures are related to incorrect lubrication: starvation, over-greasing, contamination. Calendar-based greasing ignores the actual load, temperature and condition of the assembly. LUBExpert on the SDT340 solved dosing during manual rounds. LUBExpert ON-GUARD moves that logic into an automatic system with acoustic control of every point.
How it works
- An acoustic sensor on the bearing housing (or an adjacent point) continuously assesses the friction level.
- The controller compares the signal against the "lubrication needed" threshold.
- The pulsator delivers a precise dose of grease — not on a schedule, but on evidence.
- Data goes to UAS3 for trending and reporting.
Lubrication becomes part of condition-based maintenance rather than a calendar procedure.
Why ON-GUARD beats timer-based auto-lubricators
| Parameter | Timer / calendar | ON-GUARD |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts for real load | no | yes |
| Over-greasing | frequent | eliminated |
| Evidence trail | none | acoustic log |
| Multi-point | limited | several points per controller |
| SDT340 integration | none | one ecosystem |
At plants with hundreds of points, grease savings reach 30–60% of consumption while bearing life increases. See LUBExpert grease savings.
Typical deployment layouts
Mining conveyors
Take-up and head pulleys, hard-to-reach bearings — ON-GUARD reduces the number of rounds in dusty areas.
CHP plant fans and ID fans
High temperature makes manual greasing hazardous — an automatic dose is delivered when the acoustic level rises.
Pump stations
The "SDT340 route plus ON-GUARD on the critical pumps" package — manual control over the rest of the fleet, automation on the bottleneck.
Link to the reliability programme
ON-GUARD does not replace vibration or ESA — it is the lubrication layer of the overall strategy:
- SDT ultrasound — leaks, steam, electrical, manual greasing.
- ON-GUARD — automation of routine points.
- Artesis — motor and load via current signature (roadmap).
Before deployment, audit your grease quantity standards and clear up the lubrication myths.
A 90-day pilot
- Select 10–20 bearings with a history of frequent failures.
- Take a manual LUBExpert baseline.
- Install ON-GUARD and set the thresholds.
- Compare grease consumption and the number of "hot" bearings after three months.
