Industry solutions, landing pages and articles on Ion Science SF6 LeakCheck P1 XTL — SF6 leak detector
Typical tasks
- Locating SF6 leaks on GIS and HV circuit breakers
- Checking flanges, bushings and density monitors
- Acceptance testing of new SF6 equipment
- Tightness checks on C4-FN (g3) compartments
- Routine substation surveys
Overview
The SF6 LeakCheck P1 XTL is an SF6 leak detector from the British company Ion Science. It pinpoints exactly where gas escapes on GIS, circuit breakers and current transformers: a flange, bushing, density monitor or weld.
The instrument consists of a wireless handgun probe and a console with a docking station. The operator runs the probe along joints, and the handgun shows the level on screen, vibrates, changes audio pitch and projects an LED light onto the leak point.

Negative Ion Capture technology
Conventional SF6 leak detectors saturate when they hit a jet of pure gas and need time to recover. Ion Science's NIC sensor captures the negative ions formed by electronegative gas and keeps its sensitivity even at 100 % SF6. There is no drift, no warm-up and a response of about 0.5 seconds.
Sensitivity modes
| Mode | Leak rate | Concentration | Annual SF6 loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 1×10⁻⁷ cc/s | 1 ppm | 0.01 g/yr |
| High | 1×10⁻⁸ cc/s | 0.1 ppm | 0.001 g/yr |
High mode is used for acceptance of new equipment and very small leaks; standard mode suits routine surveys.
Ease of use
- Wireless 750 g handgun — no cable in the way when working at height or in tight bays.
- Three alarm types: vibration, audio with pitch tied to leak size, and an LED light spot at the leak.
- Self-diagnostics: sample flow, sensor condition, battery, hardware faults.
- SmartSensor: supplied pre-calibrated and replaced without sending the instrument for service.
- Wheeled case for moving around the substation.

Choosing an Ion Science SF6 detector
| Task | Instrument |
|---|---|
| Pinpointing small leaks, acceptance testing, C4-FN | SF6 LeakCheck P1 XTL |
| Simple checks on rounds, limited budget | SF6 Leakmate |
| Continuous room concentration monitoring | SF6 AreaCheck P2 |
Once a leak is found, gas quality in the apparatus is checked with a Rapidox SF6 6100 analyser.
