Applications and resources
Industry solutions, landing pages and articles on Ion Science GasCheck — thermal conductivity leak detector (discontinued)
Typical tasks
- Leak-tightness checks on refrigeration and vacuum systems (legacy use)
- Pharmaceutical and R&D facility surveys
- Helium and hydrogen leak searches in manufacturing
Overview
Ion Science GasCheck was a range of handheld leak detectors built around a micro thermal conductivity (MTCD) sensor, sold in G1, G2 and G3 variants. It detected almost any gas, with particular sensitivity to ammonia, argon, butane, helium, hydrogen and SF6, and displayed readings in cc/sec, g/yr, ppm or mg/m3. GasCheck is no longer available for sale — Ion Science carried the same MTCD sensing technology forward into its current Panther PRO model, the recommended replacement.
Key features (for reference)
- Micro Thermal Conductivity Detector (MTCD) sensor
- Detects almost any gas: helium, hydrogen, ammonia, argon, butane, SF6
- Readings in cc/sec, g/yr, ppm or mg/m3 (G3 model)
- Automatic zeroing to ambient air on start-up
- Flexible sniffer probe for hard-to-reach areas
Applications (historical)
- Leak-tightness checks on refrigeration and vacuum systems
- Pharmaceutical and R&D facility surveys
- Helium and hydrogen leak searches in manufacturing

Discontinued — what to offer instead
GasCheck (G1/G2/G3) is no longer sold by Ion Science, although technical support for previously supplied units continues. The current replacement is Ion Science Panther PRO: the same MTCD sensing principle with a piezo pump, plus an extended built-in gas table for dozens of refrigerants, Bluetooth connectivity and up to 10 days of data logging. Where the core task is specifically finding SF6 leaks on power equipment, KEG TRK also offers the dedicated SF6 Leakmate and SF6 LeakCheck P1-xtl instruments.
