
Greasing pump and fan bearings: schedule vs condition
How to grease pump and fan bearings at CHP plants, mines and workshops: how they differ from a motor, the typical mistakes, and when a calendar does more harm than good.

Pumps and fans (ID fans, forced-draught, cooling) are the most frequent lubrication route points after electric motors. The questions "how do I grease pump bearings" and "how do I grease fan bearings" almost always come down to the same thing: the calendar does not match the real load, and the fitter compensates with extra strokes of the grease gun.
How a pump and a fan differ from "just a motor"
People often treat the bearings of the machine itself and the bearings of the driving motor as one point. That is a route-map error:

Different grease brands on adjacent points is normal. Mixing them is not (incompatibility).
Typical lubrication-driven failure scenarios
- Over-greasing a pump "after a vibration alarm" — the vibration came from cavitation or misalignment, but grease was pumped into the chamber. Temperature rose, the seal was pushed out. See over-greasing and pump cavitation.

The procedure: what to keep, what to replace
Keep in the procedure:
- the approved grease brand (choosing a grease);
- the maximum single dose (the formula as a ceiling);
- the requirement for a clean nipple and an open drain (technique).
Replace the "hard date" with:
- a walkdown measuring friction / temperature / vibration;
- a grease / skip / stop decision based on condition.

A practical route for the pump / fan house
- List the critical machines (standby hot-water pumps, boiler ID fan, process pumps).
- Separate points: motor DE/NDE, machine bearings.
- Before greasing — a quick assessment: is there already overheating or evidence of over-greasing.
- Small doses plus a stop based on the drain or on the acoustics.
- A CMMS record: date, volume, result.
Where ultrasound helps
On pumps and fans ultrasound is useful twice:
- before greasing — does this point need touching at all today;
- during — when the film is restored and it is time to stop.
