Laboratory Oil Analysis for Gearboxes and Hydraulics at Mines and Steel Plants | KEG TRK
Tribology for auxiliary gearboxes, hydraulic systems and bearing lube: wear particles, water, viscosity and sampling intervals at mining and metallurgical sites.
⚠️ EN version — draft. Ready to publish once kk/en routing (i18n) is implemented across the site.
Oil in a conveyor gearbox, excavator hydraulic circuit or turbine auxiliary lube loop is a liquid archive of machine condition. Metal particles, water, oxidation and viscosity loss appear before teeth break or cylinders seize. Laboratory oil analysis needs no permanent sensors — only scheduled sampling and trending.
Dust, overload and harsh media at Kazakh mining and metallurgical sites accelerate oil degradation. Without a program, gearboxes are often repaired on calendar or noise — both costlier than trending.
Priority equipment
Mining: belt conveyor and crusher gearboxes, hydraulics, mill drives, slurry pump lubrication.
Metallurgy: roll tables, coke machines, agitator and gas-cleaning drives.
Power: turbine auxiliary lube, coal/feeder and PA fan gearboxes, valve hydraulics.
Key tests
| Test | Indicates |
|---|---|
| Particle count ISO 4406 | Cleanliness |
| Spectrometry Fe, Cu, Al | Steel/bronze/aluminum wear |
| PQ index | Large ferrous debris |
| Karl Fischer water | Ingress, condensation |
| Viscosity @ 40 °C | Oxidation, dilution |
| TAN / TBN | Oxidation reserve |
Rising Fe with stable Cu — gearing wear; rising Cu with stable Fe — bronze bearing.
Sampling intervals
Critical no-spare gearboxes: 3 months. Class A conveyors: 6 months. Hydraulics in dusty plants: 3–6 months. First three samples establish baseline.
Field rules
Sample at operating temperature (30+ min under load), from flowing line or mid-depth — not sludge from sump bottom, clean bottle, label hours and temperature.
Case patterns
Gradual Fe rise on GOK conveyor — plan borescope; PQ spike — shorten outage. Water in concentrator hydraulics — fix ingress before oil change. Silicon rise without Fe — external dust via breather/seal.
Related methods
Oil analysis does not fix misalignment or unbalance; pair with thermography. See four-method PdM.
