Overview
The MVI (Mercury Vapour Indicator) is a compact portable mercury vapour indicator from the British company Ion Science. It shows mercury concentration in micrograms per cubic metre and responds to hazardous vapour in about three seconds. It is operated with one hand and suits surveys, screening for mercury spills and monitoring exposure limits.

The key advantage of the MVI is its dual beam ultraviolet absorption technology. It measures high mercury concentrations without saturating: no regeneration is needed between readings, so there is no downtime. After warm up it gives real time mercury vapour readings.
Ranges and alarm
- Two ranges — 0.1–199.9 and 1–1999 µg/m3, suited to time weighted average (TWA) monitoring.
- Audible alarm factory preset to 20 µg/m3. The level cannot be set above 35 µg/m3.
- 0–2 V output for a datalogger, which is not supplied.
Specifications
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Principle | dual beam UV absorption, 254 nm |
| Ranges | 0.1–199.9 and 1.0–1999 µg/m3 |
| Accuracy | ±5 µg or ±10% of reading |
| Repeatability | ±5% FSD |
| Zero drift | less than 5 µg/h |
| Response | approx. 3 s |
| Power | 15 V NiMH, more than 4.5 h from full charge |
| Conditions | +10 to +50 °C, 0–100% RH non-condensing |
| Dimensions | 145 × 295 × 80 mm (120 mm with handle) |
| Weight | 2.35 kg |
Interfering substances
The measurement is based on ultraviolet absorption, so other substances affect the reading. For example, at 100 ppm benzene gives a reading of 20 µg/m3, ethyl alcohol 6 µg/m3, toluene 3.5 µg/m3, and acetone and ethyl acetate 3 µg/m3 each. There is no measurable interference from carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or ammonia.
Safety
Mercury is toxic if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin or eyes, and amalgamates with gold, silver, stainless steel, aluminium and copper alloys. The instrument contains a 254 nm ultraviolet source; protective glasses are required if the lamp is operated exposed. The cover is to be removed by qualified technicians only.
