Industry solutions, landing pages and articles on Ion Science Cub — personal VOC monitor
Typical tasks
- Personal exposure monitoring at refineries and petrochemical plants
- Benzene monitoring for loading operators and samplers (Cub TAC)
- Work inside tanks and confined spaces
- Paint shops and chemical plants
- Emergency response
Overview
The Cub is a personal photoionisation monitor from the British company Ion Science. It weighs 111 grams, clips to clothing near the breathing zone and shows throughout the day how much volatile organic compound a worker is breathing. When a threshold is exceeded it sounds, vibrates and flashes.

Versions
| Version | Lamp | Purpose | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cub | 10.6 eV | most VOCs | 0.1 ppm (ppm) or 0.001 ppm (ppb) |
| Cub TAC | 10.0 eV | aromatics, benzene | 0.01 ppm |
| Cub 11.7 eV | 11.7 eV | high ionisation potential compounds | — |
A ppm unit can be upgraded to ppb without replacing the instrument.
Exposure monitoring
- STEL — 15-minute short-term exposure.
- TWA — 8-hour shift time-weighted average.
- Memory for 30,000 readings at a selectable interval, for occupational health reports.
