Grease Gun and Grease Nipple Technique Without Damaging Seals
How to use a grease gun and nipple correctly: pressure, small shots, drain, cleanliness. Why pumping “until it resists” blows seals — and how to know when to stop.
A grease gun is simple. The damage comes from pumping until it “won’t go anymore.” Handle resistance is not a signal to push harder — gun pressure can reach hundreds of bar and the weak point is almost always the seal.
At the nipple
- Clean the fitting.
- Open the drain if fitted.
- Seat the coupler firmly.
- 1–2 slow strokes, pause 5–15 s.
- Stop when fresh grease exits the drain or acoustics say enough.
- Do not “top up for luck.”
- Wipe, close drain, log.
