Grease Gun and Grease Nipple Technique Without Damaging Seals

How to use a grease gun and nipple correctly: pressure, small shots, drain, cleanliness. Why pumping “until it resists” blows seals — and how to know when to stop.

Grease gun technique

A grease gun is simple. The damage comes from pumping until it “won’t go anymore.” Handle resistance is not a signal to push harder — gun pressure can reach hundreds of bar and the weak point is almost always the seal.

At the nipple

  1. Clean the fitting.
  2. Open the drain if fitted.
  3. Seat the coupler firmly.
  4. 1–2 slow strokes, pause 5–15 s.
  5. Stop when fresh grease exits the drain or acoustics say enough.
  6. Do not “top up for luck.”
  7. Wipe, close drain, log.
