SF6 control at GIS and substations: Ion Science leak detectors

How to find an SF6 leak on a breaker or GIS bay before it turns into equipment failure. LeakCheck P1:XTL and AreaCheck P2 from Ion Science's official representative in Kazakhstan — KEG TRK.

Ion Science LeakCheck P1:XTL SF6 leak detector

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is the primary insulating and arc-quenching gas in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and SF6 breakers, and at the same time one of the most potent greenhouse gases: its global warming potential is 23,500 times that of CO2. A leak reduces the dielectric strength of the gas insulation and simultaneously creates a reputational and environmental risk for the operator. KEG TRK — Ion Science's official representative in Kazakhstan — supplies and services the leak detectors that find such leaks in seconds.

Why an SF6 leak is hard to find without an instrument

SF6 is colorless, odorless, and heavier than air. A small leak at a flange joint, breaker shaft seal, or fill valve shows no external signs until the gas density in the compartment drops enough to trigger the low-pressure alarm — at which point it's already an off-normal event, not planned maintenance.

Negative Ion Capture technology

Ion Science instruments use the patented Negative Ion Capture (NIC) technology — a method for selectively detecting SF6 molecules with high sensitivity and minimal response time, without false triggers from other gases or air humidity, which is typical for open-air switchyards in Kazakhstan's climate.

Equipment covered in this article

Instrument lineup for SF6 control

Instrument Purpose Key feature
LeakCheck P1:XTL Pinpoint leak detection at flanges, seals, valves Sensitivity down to 1 ppm, fast response
AreaCheck P2 Area/room-level SF6 monitoring in a switchgear building Continuous monitoring, audible and visual alarm
Leakmate Compact personal safety monitor Wearable device for staff working in SF6-filled compartments

Typical inspection routine

Stage Action Instrument
Routine switchyard/GIS round Spot-check flanges and breaker seals LeakCheck P1:XTL
Switchgear building Monitor ambient SF6 level in the room AreaCheck P2
Work inside an SF6 compartment Individual personnel safety monitoring Leakmate
After repair/refill Confirm joint tightness LeakCheck P1:XTL

What this delivers for the operator

  • Early detection of a leak before the pressure alarm trips — planned repair instead of an emergency;
  • Environmental reporting — documented SF6 emission control for greenhouse-gas reports;
  • Personnel safety — air monitoring in enclosed switchgear rooms, where accumulated SF6 displaces oxygen;
  • Compliance with GIS maintenance regulations from breaker manufacturers (ABB, Siemens, Hyundai and others), which require regular tightness checks.

Why through KEG TRK

As Ion Science's official representative, KEG TRK provides direct factory supply, local calibration and service in Kazakhstan, and staff training on inspection methodology — with no need to ship instruments abroad.
