Overview
The SF6 AreaCheck P2 is a fixed SF6 monitor from the British company Ion Science. It mounts on the wall of a GIS room or indoor substation and measures SF6 in the air continuously. When a threshold is exceeded, the siren sounds, indicators light up and the relay switches.
Why continuous monitoring
- SF6 is heavier than air, about five times, and collects low, displacing oxygen.
- Limit: the shift time-weighted average (TLV-TWA) is 1,000 ppm; the 0–2,000 ppm range covers it with margin.
- Early warning: a leak is detected at once, not on the next round with a portable detector.
Technology
The monitor uses a Negative Ion Capture sensor, the same principle as the portable SF6 LeakCheck P1 XTL. It does not react to other gases or moisture, so vapours and damp do not trigger false alarms. Built-in self-diagnostics and a low flow alarm watch over sampling.
