Where it is used
Typical tasks
- Gearboxes of crushers, mills and conveyors at mining plants
- Hydraulics of excavators and processing plants
- Turbines, pumps and gearboxes at power plants
- Rolling mills and metals processing
- Pulp and paper mills
Overview
The MiniLab 153 is a comprehensive oil analysis lab from AMETEK Spectro Scientific for industrial plants and power stations. It combines four instruments and, in a cycle of under 15 minutes, answers three questions: is the machine wearing, is the oil contaminated, and is its chemistry sound.
Samples no longer go to an external lab, and results are ready at once. The mechanic gets a colour-coded Trivector report with recommended actions.

Four tests
| Test | Instrument | Standard | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elemental | SpectrOil 100 | ASTM D6595 | wear, additive and contaminant metals |
| Particles and ferrous | LaserNet Fines LNF 200 | ASTM D7596 | particle count, ISO codes, total ferrous, wear particle images |
| Viscosity | MiniVisc 3000 | ASTM D8092 | oil viscosity |
| Chemistry | FluidScan | ASTM D7889 | water, TAN, oxidation; for engine oils TBN, nitration, sulfation |
What is measured
- Wear: wear particle images, counts and distribution; total ferrous in ppm; copper, silver, chromium, titanium, aluminium, magnesium, nickel, iron, manganese, lead, tin, molybdenum, cadmium, vanadium.
- Contamination: particle count and ISO codes; non-metallic particles; boron, calcium, sodium, lithium, potassium, silicon; water.
- Oil chemistry: viscosity, TAN, oxidation; additives — boron, magnesium, calcium, barium, zinc, molybdenum, phosphorus.
TruVu 360 software
- asset database and an expandable reference oil database;
- trends for every sampling point;
- alarm limit templates, diagnostics and recommended actions;
- Trivector reports highlighting out-of-limit parameters;
- automatic report distribution by email.
Sample preparation
A homogeniser, ultrasonic degasser, electrode sharpener and consumables for 100 samples are supplied. Preparation takes three steps: sharpen the electrode, homogenise the sample for accurate water measurement, and degas it.
Technical specifications
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | AMETEK Spectro Scientific |
| Instruments | SpectrOil 100, LaserNet Fines LNF 200, MiniVisc 3000, FluidScan |
| Standards | ASTM D6595, D7596, D8092, D7889 |
| Analysis time | under 15 minutes per sample |
| Software | TruVu 360 Enterprise |
| Dimensions | 71 × 214 × 66 cm |
Applications
The manufacturer lists power generation, pulp and paper, industrial manufacturing and metals processing. In Kazakhstan this mainly means gearboxes and hydraulics at mining plants, turbines and pumps at power plants, and rolling mills.
Oil analysis complements vibration monitoring and ultrasound lubrication control: vibration reveals a mechanical defect, and the oil explains its cause — wear, contamination or lubricant degradation.
