Overview
Couplant is a gel or liquid applied between an ultrasonic transducer and the part surface. Air hardly transmits ultrasound, so without couplant a thickness gauge or flaw detector receives no signal. The couplant type is chosen for roughness, temperature and surface orientation.
How to apply
- Clean loose rust and dirt from the test point.
- Apply a thin layer of couplant.
- Press the transducer and wait for a stable reading.
